Kate Laity Julie is a woman after my own heart, throwing herself into her creative muse with curiosity and no preconceived notions about what it should produce. We have ongoing conversations on Twitter about that process, about how pop music doesn’t get any respect — a perfect pop song like Julie’s ‘Hollyhocking’ is a thing of genius more so than some dull bum-faced mugging ‘perfect’ guitar solo — and of course various rants about the way the world ought to be. Love this. Favorite track: Hollyhocking.

Hollyhocking 03:04
Hollyhocking while we’re walking While we’re walking, eager talking (ooh philosophy) Eager talking, Stephen Hawking (ohhh physics) Stephen Hawking, sidewalk chalking In the park the kids are playing (I can hear them laughing) Kids are playing, you were saying (I didn’t hear that) You were saying “Happy Daying!” (happy daying, happy daying) Happy daying, fountain spraying Happy afternoon, me and you! Down the street two dogs are barking Dogs are barking, birds are larking Birds are larking, we are sparking (Oh electricity!) I am sparking, you are sparking (Oh electricity!) We are sparking, we are sparking (Oh electricity!) Hollyhocking while we’re walking

Memory This 03:38
I dreamed our baby died Did you say you’re feeling nothing Behind your good boy mask You always were the best The pulse inside my wrist I know what I’m doing is futureless I ask myself to suffer I lie down to be your lover Rock Water Sun Kiss Eyes Autumn Memory This I dreamed we’d never die A swingset, a stream, a forest Children you and I A treehouse down by the river We’d play beneath the sun We’d play between the shadows Today the game is hide and seek Tomorrow we’ll play make believe Rock Water Sun Kiss Eyes Autumn Memory This I know what I’m doing… This autumn, kiss water

Movie 02:11
Don’t turn this into a movie There’s a trailer up on the screen Picture of you then a picture of me When we’re children In the movie You would run through the backyard I would be hiding behind the garage And it’s raining In the movie You’re making drawings for all of the frames I am unthreading the hem of my jeans And you’re glowing In the movie Don’t turn this into a movie
4.
Crocus 02:20
White glowing petals Yellow stamen Imagine pollen Now tomorrow Dizzy daylight Brighter morning Not yet raining Not yet raining Winter left us Winter left us Purple now and yellow Sun is warming New spring greening Growth, bright and shocking Gray leaves are still rotting There is no winter here There is no winter here
5.
Childhood 02:45
I left my childhood in the color green The deep backyard The wind unseen I trace my fingers on a winter scene The ice I break is sharp and clean I wonder when it snows How winter knows The things I chose The cold inside me grows The white moon glows A tempest blows I left my lover in the color blue He said he cared It wasn’t true I search the weeping clouds for any clue This lightning flash is something new I wonder when it rains On windowpanes Or speeding trains How water’s fall explains The deeper stains That line my veins
